KCAL Hosts Seminar to Help Restaurant Owners Comply with the Latest Laws

With the latest tax and labor law updates coming into effect, many employers in the restaurant industry are starting to worry about their own restaurants and if they comply with the latest regulations. To relieve their concerns, KCAL Insurance Agency hosted a seminar for restaurant owners on tax and labor law. They held three back-to-back webinars on January 7, 8, and 9 in San Gabriel, Irvine, and Hacienda Heights, respectively. They invited industry experts Attorney Wendy Doo and CPA Ping Yang to discuss new laws and relevant topics for restaurant owners. Dozens of restaurants were in attendance to learn about the latest regulations.

Attorney Wendy Doo introduced restaurant related laws and regulations and common lawsuits restaurant owners face. A trending topic in these past few months that was also discussed was AB5 and the classification of 1099 employees. She reminded employers to make sure to follow all laws including providing rest breaks as necessary, paying employees the minimum wage at the very least, and many more.

Accountant Ping Yang mentioned that there has been a lot of restaurant audits in the past few months. He touched on the idea that many people believe that technology can make modifications to accounts and hide money and avoid paying sales tax, making this a criminal offense. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) will estimate the employer’s income and cash ratio and follow procedures as necessary.

Angela Chang, Chief Strategy Officer at KCAL, mentioned that many of these restaurant owners were customers of KCAL and noticed that many encountered different problems when operating their restaurant due to language and cultural differences and lack of understanding of laws and regulations. California’s tax laws for business are constantly changing and are very complex, and as a result, it’s important that employers stay updated with the latest legal information to ensure that their restaurants operate legally and compliantly.

This seminar is the first of many seminars hosted by KCAL in 2020. KCAL will be hosting more seminars throughout the month of February in various cities in LA and Orange County. Government departments including the Department of Labor (DOL), the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), CalSavers, and many more will be present to provide on-site consultations for attendees as well as answer any questions you may have about your business. KCAL hosts these seminars in hopes of helping employers learn more about labor law and avoid running into any kind of trouble.
