Medicare beneficiaries, please note: Medicare has announced that 1.3 million users will receive updated MBI numbers, which will take effect on April 14, 2026. The deadline to make Medicare Advantage plan changes this year is March 31.

MBI identification number change

The Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) is an 11‑character alphanumeric code on your Medicare card, required for medical visits, prescriptions, and hospital admissions. While Medicare covers well over 1.3 million beneficiaries nationwide, this update affects only selected users: those who receive a new card in March 2026 will have their MBI replaced, and those who do not receive a new card will retain their current number.

Medicare conducted a major identifier update in 2018, replacing the previous cards that displayed Social Security numbers—an approach that posed significant privacy risks if a card was lost. The government transitioned to alphanumeric MBI numbers to enhance security. The current update may be motivated by the following considerations:

  • To reduce the risk of unauthorized access or duplication of the identifier ;
  • To prevent unauthorized use of old numbers in fraudulent reimbursement activities ;
  • To apply system data adjustments to a statistically selected user group ;

Upon receiving your new Medicare card, please complete the following actions:

1. Verify your information: Carefully review your name, identification details, and all personal information on the new card to ensure there are no errors or omissions.

2. Update your number: Your old MBI will officially expire on April 14. Before that date, be sure to provide a copy of your new card to your primary care physician, specialists, hospitals you visit regularly, your pharmacy, your insurance company, and your insurance agent so they can update your information in their systems.

3. Disposition of old card: You may keep your old card at home for reference, but it cannot be used for medical visits or prescription services after April 14.

4. Protect your information: For routine medical visits, it is recommended to use a photocopy of your new card. Do not disclose your MBI number to anyone other than authorized health‑care providers or insurance personnel to safeguard your personal information.

If you have not received your new card and your old card becomes invalid after April 14, it is likely that the new card has already been mailed but has not yet reached you. You may contact Medicare at 800‑633‑4227 for assistance in verifying your new MBI and requesting a replacement card. If the card arrives while you are away or is accidentally lost, please also contact Medicare promptly for further support.

The period for Medicare Advantage plan change applications is nearing its end.

Medicare Advantage beneficiaries have until March 31 to complete their final plan change for the year. Those wishing to move from an HMO plan to a Medigap policy with Part D coverage must first satisfy the insurer’s medical underwriting requirements. If this window is missed, the next period to make changes will begin on October 15 for the following year’s coverage.
