Covered California’s 2018 Open Enrollment officially began on November 1. Executive Director of Covered California, Peter Lee, made a stop at KCAL Insurance Agency’s headquarters in Hacienda Heights to kick-off the first day of Open Enrollment. The purpose of their bus tour is to educate and inform the community about the importance of healthcare, encouraging the community to enroll into healthcare as well. President of KCAL, Kenny Chang, along with various health insurance companies, community leaders, and elected officials were in attendance to help celebrate the start of 2018 Open Enrollment!

On the fourth anniversary of Covered California’s Open Enrollment, more than three million Californians bought affordable healthcare. To encourage the uninsured to purchase health insurance as well as educate the community about the importance of health care, Covered California is going on a bus tour for this year’s 2018 fifth Open Enrollment period. They will travel 1,300 miles on a tour bus, making stop through cities across California over the span of more than seven days.

Executive Director of Covered California, Peter Lee reminds the public to not let the talk in Washington affect your decision in enrolling into health care. In the 2018 Covered California healthcare marketplace, there are still many different health insurance companies you can choose from and many levels of benefits to choose from. With the federal subsidies situation going on in California, premiums have increased in 2018 but for those who are eligible for premium subsidies, there is a chance that it may not affect you!

For example, for Mr. Chang, a single 45-year old living in Rowland Heights with an annual income of $20,000, if he were to purchase a Kaiser Bronze 60 HMO plan, his premium would be around $280 a month in 2018. However, he would only end up paying $1 a month because the rest are subsidized by the government.

Peter Lee continued to praise the Chinese community and its role in bringing success to Covered California, stating, “…we have been so happy about our work with the Chinese media… we’ve done advertising in Chinese papers, Chinese radio, Chinese TV, and that’s important because we want all Californians to get covered including and especially the Chinese community, so I want to thank you for joining us here today.”

Ms. Li, a local resident, has been insured with KCAL for more than 20 years. With Molina’s huge premium increase in 2018, she also made a few comments, “A health agent from KCAL contacted me, letting me know that they were going to find a way to lower my premium, and they did! The entire process was complete, my premium didn’t even increase, and I can even see the same doctor I was seeing before! I feel at peace knowing that I won’t have to worry about such expensive premiums and that if I do ever run into any issues, I can just contact KCAL.”

President of KCAL Insurance Agency Kenny Chang has been continuously appreciative of Covered California, various insurance companies, and medical representatives for their long-term support at KCAL and for KCAL clients. He also brought up that it is very possible to get premiums as little as $1 – $2 a month!

Kenny Chang also pointed out that since the 2018 premiums for middle class families will face a premium increase, it is important to take advantage of Open Enrollment period whether it’s changing your plan from PPO to HMO or downgrading a level from Silver to Bronze, or by consulting with a professional insurance agent. There is still a chance for you to lower your costs and spend less!

He emphasized multiple times to take action as soon as possible! To ensure that your policy becomes effective on January 1, 2018, you will need to apply and enroll by December 15, 2017.
