Extend jobless benefits

President Obama signed a $33.9-billion package of legislation on July 22 extending unemployment benefits for 2.5 million jobless Americans. The California Employment Development Department immediately announced that it would begin processing benefits for more than 400,000 unemployed people, retroactive to May. State workers will be on duty throughout the weekend to issue checks to eligible claimants.
