Easter Quake Damage $91 Million

California estimated the 7.2 April 4 earthquake caused about $91 million in damage in impoverished Imperial County. Schwarzenegger's office sent a letter to the federal government with the preliminary estimate and asked that the quake that left two people dead in Mexico be declared a major disaster. U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein reiterated the request for federal help in a letter sent to President Barack Obama. If he does make the declaration, the federal government would cover 75 percent of the costs of repairing the damage, and state and local officials would pay 25 percent.
