Help Eliminate Auto Thefts (H.E.A.T.), a Michigan auto-theft prevention program，warns consumers to be aware of car thieves at packed shopping mall parking lots. To prevent break-ins, H.E.A.T. encourages consumers to park in well-lit, high-traffic areas, lock valuables out of sight in the trunk and stay observant of their surroundings. Theft of a car is covered under comprehensive car insurance. Personal belongings stolen from inside the car are covered under renters or home insurance.
