The Importance of Disability Insurance Coverage
Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income if you are unable to work because of injury or illness. When you review your employer's disability benefit, here is what to consider: Check both short term and long term. Find out how much of your income will be replaced under the terms of your group disability insurance. Disability payments from coverage paid for by your employer are taxable. Disability payments from insurance you pay for yourself are not taxable. If you don't sign up for optional disability insurance during your firm's open enrollment period, you may be able to sign up later. If your firm's disability coverage is not adequate, you may be able to purchase an individual policy that will provide additional benefits.
